AddThis is Going Away. Is Your Nonprofit Ready?

You might have heard that the AddThis social sharing tool from Oracle is going away as of the end of May 2023. Since many nonprofits use AddThis on their peer-to-peer fundraising websites (and sometimes their general websites), we thought we’d answer some questions about what tools you can use as an alternative.

What to know about the end of AddThis

First, let’s look at what you can expect from the end of AddThis. According to the AddThis website, AddThis users can expect the following after May 31, 2023:

  • The user must immediately cease its use of AddThis services, and promptly remove all AddThis related code and technology from its websites.
  • AddThis buttons may disappear from the user’s websites.
  • The AddThis dashboard associated with the user’s registration for AddThis, and all support for AddThis services, will no longer be available.
  • All features of AddThis configured to interoperate with user’s websites, any other Oracle services, or any third-party tools and plug-ins will no longer function.

Alternatives to AddThis

Now, let’s talk about some good options to replace AddThis and how you can make the move. Here are two alternatives that our team has tested:

ShareThis (https://platform.sharethis.com/) – This tool is very similar to AddThis. It requires registration, and you must associate your website domain to the link buttons during setup. This allows your organization to run reports and analytics on the performance of social sharing through the tool.

AddToAny (https://www.addtoany.com/) – This tool does not require an account, making it easier to implement. A share code snippet is provided; you simply paste it into your website code. A drawback is that AddToAny does not provide reports and analytics, though it does integrate with Google Analytics.

Both options are free, customizable, and offer various button styles, layouts, and formats.

You can find other alternatives to AddThis, but keep in mind that our team has not tested them at this time. Be sure to research them to ensure they provide the ease and functionality you need.
